Watch Winders
Questions & Answers
Anyone who owns an automatic watch would want a watch winder. Though it is not really necessary to wind a watch up to the minute, there is nothing as annoying as finding that your favorite watch has stopped and needs resetting before it can be worn. For complicated watches such as chronographs with day/date calendars, moon phases and more, resetting is a time-intensive hassle. Whether you own just one or more mechanical watches, a good quality watch winder can save you a lot of time and headache. Otherwise, you would have to wind the watch up every time you wear one. You time will be much more well spent than wind up your watches which is not only time consuming but is also a very tedious task.
Due to the precision nature of mechanical watches, it is important to keep the oil moving freely to ensure quality and long term performance. If the watch stops running, the lubricants in the watch stop flowing. Re-oiling the watch might be necessary over the long term. You may have to overhaul a watch if it has not been used for a long period of time. The cost of overhauling an expensive watch is itself quite expensive. A well manufactured watch winder keeps your watch properly lubricated and ready to wear anytime. A watch winder will more than pay for itself considering the cost of the overhaul and maintenance.
There are no set rules as to how many turns a watch is required to be fully wound up. An active person wearing a watch all day will wind the watch up faster than a sedentary person. Today, most watch manufacturers would give recommendations as to the number of Turns per Day (TPD). In general, most automatic watches require a minimum of 500 TPD and for some chronograph models with other complicate functions, TPD in excess of 1,000 might be necessary. So a watch winder should be able to provide a minimum of 500 to 1,000 TPD to accommodate all watch designs. Every model and make has different winding requirement. Consult your manufacturer for details. Our watch winders are designed to meet all watches brands' minimum TPD requirement.
Disclaimer: As watch design and specification varies greatly; and new models, technology and designs evolve rapidly. Always consult your watch's owner manual, or your watch's manufacturer for your watch's exact requirement.
How long after a watch is wound up would it require another winding up? Most automatic watches have a short power reserve. Some might needed to be wound up everyday, others might last 2 days or more before winding is required. Consult your manufacturer for the power reserve of your particular model. For example, the Mecaquartz has a 50 - 60 day reserve when fully charged, so the watch requires winding only after 7 weeks of wearing.
Can a watch be over wound?
In fact, there is no such thing as over-winding a watch. Watches are designed for active wear. Saying a watch can be over-wound is not totally correct. Can an active sportsman wearing a watch all year round over-winds his watch? Certainly not. All automatic watches have a built-in safety mechanism to prevent over-winding. Thus, the common conception of "over-winding" should refer more to the wear and tear on the bearings of the watches rather than really over-winding the watch. All our watch-winder products has a build in program to avoid any such "over-winding".There are 3 types of rotating directions: Clockwise only, counterclockwise only, or bi-directional winding. It all depends on the movement of the watch.
Consult your dealer or manufacturer for the direction of winding of your particular watch. Most popular brands can wind both directions. For example, as of the date of this writing, all Rolex watches require winding in both directions. You may test the direction of rotation using the following experiment. Try only clockwise, if the watch winds up, then your watch has clockwise rotation winding mechanism. If the watch does not wind up, that means your watch has counter-clockwise rotation mechanism. Now try counter-clockwise to confirm the last action. If either direction works, your watch has a dual directional winding mechanism. You may use the Alternating Direction program. Otherwise, select clockwise or counter-clockwise program according to the experiment mentioned above. All our watch winder models can rotate in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, thus ensuring our watch winders can be used by all brands of watches. With our Admiral (2 watches model) and Regency (4 watches model) winders, not only can you select to wind up your watch in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, buy you can also select the "Auto-Alternating-Rotation" function so the winder can rotate in both directions automatically.Watch winders range very widely in terms of prices and features.
